These days, the African-American Film Critics Association employs an unusual announcement strategy for its awards: they declare their Best Film Top 10 weeks before getting around to declaring their awards winners in other categories. I mean, sure, why not? Typically, their Top 10 is centred around Black filmmaking, though not wholly comprised of Black-centric cinema, and this year is no exception. This year, they've picked Gina Prince-Bythewood's The Woman King as their #1 movie of the year, the first time that a film directed by a Woman of Colour has won their top prize. A fine choice, and some other fine movies in their Top 10. Check back on 16 January to find out the rest of their 2022 awards winners.
