The 2021 Gotham Award nominations represented serious success for several breakthrough female directors, but their awards, presented last night, represent yet further success for just one. Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, takes four of the five awards it was up for, including Best Feature, the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director Award for Gyllenhaal, and Outstanding Lead Performance for star Olivia Colman, tying with The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain's Frankie Faison. Despite the relative shut-out of almost all other contenders, this is a strong slate of winners from the Gotham voters, and bodes well for a promising awards season for all those honoured.
