The Irishman leads 2019 Critics Choice nominations with 14

The Broadcast Film Critics Association has announced its nominations for the best in cinema of 2019, and Martin Scorsese's Netflix production The Irishman leads the pack with 14 mentions. It's followed closely by Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood with 12.

Greta Gerwig's Little Women makes a strong showing too after a somewhat soft start to awards season, while Bong Joon Ho's Parasite proves it can contend among the big televised awards players. Disappointing, however, that with so many excellent candidates, the BFCA found only one movie directed by a woman among its ten Best Picture nominees: what about A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, The Farewell or Hustlers, all of which are nominees elsewhere here?

Worth noting that the BFCA prides itself on matching Oscar as closely as possible, hence the expansion of almost all its categories to account for more potential matches. Indeed, their nominations are always better considered as Oscar predictions than as legitimate representations of opinion.

The 25th annual Critics Choice awards will be handed out during a live TV broadcast on the 12th of January.
