The Irishman is NBR's film of 2019

The National Board of Review has kicked off awards season 2019-20 proper by declaring Martin Scorsese's The Irishman the best film of the year. Its director was also declared an NBR Icon alongside the film's stars Robert de Niro and Al Pacino, though neither won individual acting awards.

There was support elsewhere for Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood, the Safdie brothers' Uncut Gems and, no surprise, Clint Eastwood's Richard Jewell (the NBR has a long history of rewarding Eastwood's movies), while Foreign Language Film award winner Parasite won what's sure to be its first of many critics awards this year.

If you're keeping track of SOS' Critics Consensus race, you can add these results to those already announced in the BFCA Documentary awards, the Gotham awards, nominations for the Spirit awards and the Hollywood Critics Association awards, and Sight & Sound's 2019 poll.
