The 1993 Critics Consensus Award Nominations

James Fox and Anthony Hopkins in The Remains of the Day

A few firsts occur in the nominations for the 1993 Critics Consensus Awards. A remarkable three directors - Robert Altman, Clint Eastwood and James Ivory - become the first to have two pictures represented in the Best Picture category in consecutive years, with Merchant / Ivory receiving their third nomination there in four years. Eastwood's A Perfect World becomes the first such nominee to miss every other category. And Jane Campion becomes the first woman nominated for Best Director and the first to direct a Best Picture nominee. '93 is the third year in a row to exclude an acting Oscar winner, the first in Leading, as Tom Hanks misses for Philadelphia. All five Best Actor slots are occupied by Brits, and for the only time in CCA history, two actors receive double nominations in the same individual acting category. Interesting also how, even with a consolidated Screenplay category, two of its five nominees were not up for either Oscar. This will be the final year of seven categories, as from 1994 we begin our climb to the current total of 16. Later, I'll reveal the winners for the '93 awards, whose nominations are currently all viewable below:
