Non-English language trio lead GALECA's 2019 Dorian award nominations

Queer eyes for the cinephiles! Or rather of the cinephiles, as the Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association has announced the nominations for its 2019 Dorian awards. Across all movie categories, the three top performers are all non-English language titles, and also all award winners from the Cannes Film Festival back in May. Celine Sciamma's Portrait of a Lady on Fire receives six mentions, ditto Bong Joon Ho's Palme d'Or winner Parasite, while Pedro Almodovar's Pain & Glory receives five.

It makes sense for a queer organization to recognize queer cinema as GALECA does here, not least when it has a category dedicated to it, but it's nonetheless extremely heartening to see two of the group's favourite features of 2019 (Pain & Glory and Portrait of a Lady on Fire) fit that bill so explicitly. It's also good to see two of the five Best Director nominees be women, as female-directed film has played a major role throughout awards season, even as group after group has ignored female directors altogether.

Only five days to go until GALECA announces its Dorian award winners on the 8th of January.
