The Producers Guild of America awards can often signal a shift in the awards race. As the first major industry prize equivalent to the Oscar for Best Picture, their top award going to the existing frontrunner can declare a sweep for said frontrunner; their top award going elsewhere can indicate either a close race or a decisive move away from the first half of the season, dominated by critics awards. It's not quite a half of the current season this year, given the extended timeline, but the PGA had no such contrarian intentions this year. They've agreed with all the big awards groups before them in naming Chloe Zhao's Nomadland the best film of 2020. Soul earns an expected win in the Animated category, while My Octopus Teacher takes another step toward the Oscar with its Documentary win - keep an eye on that category this year because it feels like it could go any which way.
