LEJA award winners announced: The Power of the Dog wins four
Funny how things can shift so suddenly once people's perspectives on the Oscar race respond to unexpected developments... I'm not saying voters aren't voting with their hearts, but it does strike me as a little odd that previous Best Supporting Actor frontrunner Kodi Smit-McPhee should have lost the two most recent critics' prizes to Troy Kotsur, after Kotsur won the SAG Award last weekend. Especially odd when Smit-McPhee's movie, The Power of the Dog, should be so popular with one of the critics' groups in question: the Latino Entertainment Journalists Association, which has declared Jane Campion's neo-Western its favourite film of the year in four categories including Best Picture, and Best Director. Its four-strong haul is matched by both Dune and an impressive performance from Encanto, one of several Latino-centric movies from 2021 that has clicked with audiences and critics, and which has been honoured by LEJA this year.
