Joker wins top Phoenix Film Critics Society awards
Updated: Dec 19, 2019

It's one of the year's most divisive, controversial movies, so it's rather a surprise it's taken two busy weeks of awards season for Todd Phillips' Joker to win a Best Picture prize. Here to remedy that is the Phoenix Film Critics Society, which bestows its top award upon the DC dramatic thriller, alongside a Best Actor prize for lead Joaquin Phoenix.
The PFCS also showed some serious love for Sam Mendes' WWI action thriller 1917, with it winning Best Director for Mendes and four technical prizes. Rian Johnson's Knives Out wins for its screenplay and its cast, while The Irishman and Parasite are shut out save for Best Picture top ten placements and an obligatory Foreign Language Film prize for the latter.
