Bless the Hawaii Film Critics Society! They've announced the nominees for their 2022 awards, and they've done it in style... a specific style, that is, one that appears to be ranked in order of preference. They wouldn't be the first critics group to do this, and for sure I'm no stickler for strict alphabetization of nominations announcements, but it'll be... interesting(?) to see if the winners turn out to be mostly (or entirely) the movies at the top of these lists. Judge for yourself - I've kept them in their published order. As ever, there are some curious choices here: the good (Colin Farrell for The Batman!), the bad (Brad Pitt for Babylon) and the ugly (separate Best First Film and Best New Filmmaker categories with only two crossover titles; The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent now renamed The Unbearable Weight of Immeasurable Talent). The big story, however, is the stonking 16 nominations for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Winners will be announced... whenever the HFCS gets around to it, I guess.
