Costume Designers Guild announces its 2019 award winners

The Costume Designers Guild held its 2019 awards ceremony in Hollywood last night, with some surprise winners. Unfortunately, voters didn't take to Ruth E. Carter's brilliant designs for Dolemite Is My Name after her outrageous Oscar snub; rather, they went with a peculiar pick: Jojo Rabbit's Mayes C. Rubeo. She's the sole Oscar nominee among this year's CDG award recipients, though most still expect the Academy Award to go to either Jacqueline Durran for Little Women (not nominated here) or Arianne Phillips for Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. It's a close category this year, whichever way you look at it!
Another surprise winner was in Contemporary Film, where Hustlers' losing streak at major awards continued. Jenny Eagan won that prize for Knives Out instead, while the great Ellen Mirojnick deservedly won in Sci-Fi / Fantasy Film for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
