Being based in Hollywood, and able to afford a live ceremony with invited celebrity guests, the Hollywood Critics Association has emerged as one of the more noticeable critics' groups in the business, if not one of the more notable. Their fifth annual awards were announced last night, after a near three-month wait since nominations were announced, and they seem to indicate the 2021-2022 awards race is taking a surprising turn. Sian Heder's CODA wins three big prizes from the HCA, including Best Picture, and Best Supporting Actor for Troy Kotsur. Throw in Best Adapted Screenplay, plus the movie's success at the weekend's Screen Actors Guild awards, and we may have a new Oscar frontrunner on our hands. Indeed, all three were categories assumed to be headed The Power of the Dog's way, though all three are the only three CODA will contend for at the Oscars later this month, while The Power of the Dog will contend for quadruple that. All the winners' details below.
