Broadcast Film Critics Association Break New Ground With Roma As Best Picture

It was a night full of... choices, though what else could you expect from the Critics Choice Awards? Roma won Best Picture and three other awards, which fits with the season's narrative, though seemed much less of a sure thing here than at other, less commercial-minded critics groups. Indeed, Alfonso Cuaron's movie becomes the first non-English language title to win the BFCA's top award, as well as the first streaming title. There was a Best Actress tie between Glenn Close and Lady Gaga, with Olivia Colman having to settle for a shared Acting Ensemble prize and an Actress in a Comedy award. It was a very poor showing for The Favourite, which went into the night with the most nominations (14) but only two wins; spare a thought for Mary Poppins Returns, up for nine awards and winning none. The acting races are indeed becoming quite competitive, with these winners complicating the Leading categories significantly, and perhaps only somewhat solidifying the frontrunner status of these Supporting winners.
