A busy day for awards at the head of a busy week for awards kicks off with the announcement of the Art Directors Guild's 2021 awards nominations. Despite being named for art directors, these awards honour production designers, the people in charge of overseeing a project's overall physical appearance, from concept art to set design. Glancing through this year's nominees, I'm quite pleased with their choices, with innovative work like Stefan Dechant's for The Tragedy of Macbeth and stylish stuff like Cara Brower's for Candyman joined by exquisitely detailed designs like Adam Stockhausen's for The French Dispatch and period-perfect work like Florencia Martin's for Licorice Pizza. Fans of Belfast and The Power of the Dog may be disappointed, however, as those two potential Oscar titans miss out here. Winners will be announced on the 5th of March.
