African-American Film Critics Association awards: The Harder They Fall wins Best Picture

You can always rely on the AAFCA to show out for modern black film, and their 2021 awards are nothing if not testament to that reliability. Jeymes Samuel's Western The Harder They Fall picks up its first Best Picture win of the 2021 awards season, with a top five films all led by, and almost all directed by black artists. Places 6-10 on that list diversify their selection, including documentary (Who We Are: A Chronicle of Racism in America), musical (West Side Story), and movies quite specifically not from a black perspective at all (Belfast), so anyone looking to accuse AAFCA members from a myopic view on the year in film would be quite unwise to do so. Details of winners across all the association's awards categories to follow.
