2020/21 Film Independent Spirit Award winners announced

Normally held on Oscar eve, the 2020/21 Spirit Awards took place this year a couple days early, though still much later than usual. Nomadland was, as predicted, the top award winner with four prizes including Best Picture and Director. Lead Frances McDormand lost her nomination to Promising Young Woman's Carey Mulligan however, with Emerald Fennell's debut feature also winning Best Screenplay. All four acting award winners are up for this weekend's Oscar, including surprise winner Riz Ahmed for Leading Actor in Sound of Metal, beating Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom; many pundits are predicting neither to win on Sunday, as The Father's Anthony Hopkins gains momentum. And rotten luck for Never Rarely Sometimes Always as voters took their usual route of snubbing movies also snubbed by the Academy - its 7/7 losses is a record for these awards.
