It was hard to tell which way the 2019 Critics Choice awards would go this year. On the one hand, Parasite has been the clear favourite among critics throughout awards season so far. On the other hand, this is the Broadcast Film Critics Association, and one considers them actual 'critics' at one's own peril...
Even watching the ceremony this year, there was no clear narrative. Parasite made little overall impact, nominations leader The Irishman picked up a mere single prize; then Parasite rebounded with a Best Director win, though one it had to tie with Golden Globe victor 1917. And, in the end, it was Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood that won not only the BFCA's Best Picture award, but also the most prizes of the night, with four total.
