In a development few saw coming, it wasn't Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born that ended up leading the 2018 Golden Globe nominations, but Adam McKay's as-yet unreleased Dick Cheney biopic Vice! It claimed six mentions to three other films' (The Favourite, Green Book, and yes, A Star Is Born) five, putting it out ahead of the pack as the first major nominations slate of Oscar season is announced. Popular choices Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians rallied to Best Picture nominations, while movies like Boy Erased and A Private War receive surprise boots with leading acting nominations. Speaking of acting, much-touted Supporting Actor frontrunner Sam Elliott missed out as Vice picked up three nominations for its cast, though we'll have to wait until the Golden Globe awards ceremony on the 6th of January - exactly one month today - to find out if that's a sign of weakness in A Star Is Born's awards prospects.
