The 2003 Critics Consensus Award Nominations


Sean Penn and Tim Robbins in Mystic River

Three pictures dominate the nominations for the 2003 Critics Consensus Awards, and they're the three you'd expect. Clint Eastwood announces his re-arrival to the awards scene with Mystic River, claiming seven nominations and thus narrowly beating the final Lord of the Rings movie, The Return of the King, and Lost in Translation, each with six, to the title of most-nominated movie of the year. Coppola follows in Jane Campion's footsteps, becoming only the second female director to be recognized in either Best Picture or Director, and also in Original Screenplay. There was a close fight for Picture nominations, resulting in a configuration you may not have predicted, but then you likely wouldn't have predicted any of the possible lineups that just missed out. Notable is Winged Migration's Best Cinematography nod - the first and, to date, only documentary up for that award in CCA history. Winners will be announced later today, and nominees are all below:
