Three years of awards ceremonies, and three days of coverage: welcome to the era of The Lord of the Rings franchise at the Critics Consensus Awards. The first installment, The Fellowship of the Ring, co-leads the 2001 nominees alongside In the Bedroom and Mulholland Dr. (each with six), the last of those a much bigger hit with the critics' awards and polls that year than it was with the Academy. And their Best Picture winner, A Beautiful Mind, accrues just three nominations across 13 categories (newly increased due to the addition of Best Ensemble Cast), missing Best Picture, Director and Actor. The movies it beat to the top Oscars fare far better here, and these Picture and Director lineups are about as flawless as any I've seen across all 50 years' worth of CCAs, though the double Nicole Kidman omission in Leading Actress is a real head-scratcher. But my personal favourite detail about the '01 nominees? That Chris Doyle / Lee Ping Bin nod in Cinematography for In the Mood for Love. Lovely indeed!
