The 2000 Critics Consensus Award Nominations

Zhang Zi Yi and Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Non-English language titles haven't made appearances in Best Picture at the Critics Consensus Awards for a while. They represented three of the first six winners here, but have been absent since 1974's Scenes of a Marriage. A triumphant return, then, in 2000's CCAs, as two of the five nominees are in Mandarin: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (as expected, and leading all nominees with six mentions) and Yi Yi (not as expected, but most welcome). Both are also the first non-European or North American movies in the top category. The inclusion of Yi Yi is another result of the increasing importance of polls around this time for the CCAs, keeping Oscar Best Picture winner Gladiator out of the top five - the latest in a rapidly growing line of Oscar winners to miss a nomination from the critics - joined by its lead, fellow Oscar winner Russell Crowe, in missing out.
