At last, a movie breaks past the six-nomination barrier! Sam Mendes' breakthrough hit American Beauty, which very nearly became only the fourth movie in history to win the top five Oscars for 1999, leads the Critics Consensus Award nominations for the year with seven. It's joined in the Best Picture lineup by only one other Oscar nominee in that category - Michael Mann's The Insider. '99 is rightly regarded as being a banner year for the movie industry not only in the U.S. but internationally, though alas all the nominated titles at the CCAs were in English outside of the Documentary and Foreign Language categories. David O. Russell turns up for the first time (and not for the last!), while Mike Leigh returns in both Picture and Director, yet again bizarrely missing for Screenplay.
