The 1996 Critics Consensus Award Nominations

Frances McDormand and John Carroll Lynch in Fargo

Two Oscar Best Picture winners in a row, two Best Picture nominations missed in a row at the Critics Consensus Awards. Prizes and poll-toppers from critics in 1996 weren't as kind on The English Patient as they were five other titles, including Jim Jarmusch's highly un-Oscar friendly Dead Man, but it's the Coen brothers' Fargo that earns the most support of the lot at nominations stage. It claims a record-equalling six CCA nods, including a first for modern cinematography legend Roger Deakins. The English Patient racks up an impressive five outside of Best Picture (currently a record for a non-BP nominee), including both of its Oscar-nominated female actors placed in Supporting (tbf, the Academy ought to have swapped them around). And look - three acting nominations for The Portrait of a Lady! Check back later for details of award winners, while the '96 CCA nominees are in full below.
