1985 was a year of near-successes for a couple of pictures with the Critics Consensus Awards. The Colour Purple, alas, won nothing but placed a close second in Best Actress and a rather further second in Supporting Actress (Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey, respectively). Beating it resoundingly in Supporting Actress was Prizzi's Honour, which at least won something, but also placed third in Supporting Actor alongside second in Picture, Director, Actor and Screenplay. Awards were relatively spread out, though, with room for five winners; Out of Africa took Picture very narrowly, and arguably surprisingly, given its current reputation as a somewhat undeserving Oscar winner. It didn't win Director, however, where Kurosawa Akira becomes not only the first Asian winner but the first person of colour to win in this category. And both Woody Allen and Meryl Streep join Ingmar Bergman, James L. Brooks and Jack Nicholson as the joint most-awarded persons to date with their respective Best Screenplay and Actress win.
