Once was a time when the annual AFI list of the year's best movies was eagerly anticipated as a unique and influential celebration of American cinema. These days, it's just yet another stop on the road to Oscar, which is why this year's selection of movies that are legitimately largely fine seems so disappointing. Oscar contenders that have already made their mark in an awards season that's only been going on a week abound here, notching up all ten slots with precious little space for boosting the chances of more interesting, as-yet-underrecognized titles.
